pulling engine

1997 geo metro with 1.3 litre and automatic trans. Other than the direct instructions in haynes and chiltons books, whats BEST way to pull this motor? I know some of you have personal tricks and experience here that can help greatly. geozuki you around? Thanks a bunch men or women.

With the 3 cylinders I don't mind pulling the engine or transmission independently from the other. However with the 4 cylinders I find it easiest to pull the engine and transmission as a unit. Remove the torque converter bolts while installed. Remove the head while installed. Than attach a crane to the head bolts, remove mounts and axles, lift out of car, then seperate afterwards. A little more prep time, but worth the relative hassle of the 4cylinders. Just my two cents.

I swapped out a motor this spring on my 1.3L automatic. I did not pull the transmission with the motor. Instead, I removed the crank pulley to gain room for shifting the motor away from the transmission. I left the intake and throttle body attached to the engine along with the exhaust manifold. A couple of the bellhousing fasteners are a PIA, but overall, not too bad of a job
