'97 tahoe tranny

We have a "97 4x4 tahoe with 350 engine. Vehicle was slow to shift into reverse when cold and there was evidence that it may have boiled out the vent and onto the shift linkage and front drive shaft. We dropped the pan, replaced filter, and put in new fluid. Transmission fluid was spotless! Keep in mind we were very weary of doing this out of fear of causing other problems (if it ain't broke don't fix it).

There wasn't a noticeable change in time to shift into reverse when cold after changing the filter. My brother was driving on the highway and when stomping down to accelerate it reved and seemed to slip. He coasted and made it home saying it acted like it only had 1st and 2nd.

We are somewhat in a bind b/c we are leaving for florida x/mas day from ohio with the intention of towing a boat. Is this in need of something simple like a solenoid or ignition switch, or a complete rebuild. We are "mechanically able" but Christmas is soon and we need a tow vehicle.

Slipping in reverse is not good.
But first make sure the fluid level shows full after the transmission and engine is warmed up good.
If so it sounds like rebuild or a rebuilt time.
Is there any codes/check engine lights in transmission or engine computer system?

No check engine lights. Dad already dropped it off at Ammoco (sp?) for a rebuild. Hopefully it will be done in time.

Oh my.
I hope it is not to late.
That chain store does not have a very good reputation.
Not sure about them in your area but I would do a little checking around.
Tips on finding a good repair shop.
Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.
