97 jetta alarm

i have a 97 jetta and i just replaced the battery. now when i try to start the car or even open my door the alarm goes off. usually i would use the passenger door to turn the alarm off but now it won't work. i would like to know how to disconnect the alarm system so that i can start my car and if i can't do that then i guess i'll have to spend a fortune to fix it. thank you

I had the same problem when we first got the car. Don't disconnect the alarm. It is confused and needs to be reset. The alarm runs for four minutes then shuts off. So during this time. Open all four doors, then close and lock each one manually. Same with trunk. With you outside the vehicle. Then with the key unlock just the driver's door. One quarter turn opens the one door, two quarter turns unlocks all four.
