Security light

Well here I go again ragging about our 2000 Grand am. This time its the security part that I could use a little help with. Now going down the road the security light comes on sometimes but then it goes out. Thats not too bad but there are times that you go to start it and it is on and flashing and the car wont start untill you sit with the key on for ten minutes then the light stopps flashing and goes out and the car will start. Its doing this more often all the time. Just last night it happened twice to the wife and then she comes home and gives me hell, so I have to find out how to fix this. Anybody have any ideas?? I stopped at our GM dealership and asked the service manager if it is possible to deleate this function from the computer and he didnt seem to know or even care for that matter.

Re: Security light

Anti-tamper device built into the ignition lock. Notorious for premature failure on late model GM cars. I had the dealer replace mine (300U$) because, at the time I had no idea what the issue was.

Re: Security light

Hey funcruise,
This is typical.

First thing is to eleminate some things that can cause this.

Make sure thiers not a bunch of stufff on the key chain.
Then make sure the key is clean. Might even try some compressed air to blow out the lock cyclinder.

When starting the car, insert the key and give it a couple 3 seconds to sense the key is inserted before starting.

If you repeat the 10min procedure 3X,
it should reset the passlock syst.

If that still doesnt change anything you'll want to get it scanned to see if theirs anything else that could be causing this.
