Cold Start

I have an 90 Lasaber with the 3.8. Car runs really good but has no 3rd or overdrive. My work commuter. Anyhow every once and a while it doesn't want to start when cold. I swear having it in cold wind situations is worse than just cold. Montana can be a cold climate and I will use the block heater when less than 15 degrees. But again today high winds. Temps around 33, doesn't want to start this afternoon after 8hrs parked. Charging system is good. My friend told me the ignition modules are known for this kind of behavior. To expensive just to try. Car will eventually start, but only if I dump fuel to it. Just cranks and tries. Your thoughts appreciated.

You could have a problem with the CTS. The CTS (coolant temp sensor), is used for open/closed loop operation and serves the same purpose as the “choke” in the older cars. It is used in the calculation for fuel and ignition in the FI cars. The ECM supplies the sensor with +5V and measures the voltage drop through the thermosistor to determine temperature. The function of the CTS sensor can be verified with a scanner, by watching the “engine temp” frame. You could also use a DVOM to measure resistance, using the temp/resistance values below.

You could also have weak coils, or high resistance in the plugs or wires. Have you changed them lately? ICM malfunctions are more prevalent with high temperatures, rather than low temperatures.
