I need codes

Hi guys, I have a friend with either an 01 or an 02 mitsu eclipse, 2.4 auto, its throwing a CEL and sounds like a slight misfire, but I want to pull the codes. I tried the key on key off cycle that used to work on my neon to no avail so if you guys could tell me how to get the codes from the car without a scanner and a list of the codes if at all possible.

Thanks guys.

Re: I need codes

Autozone will pull the codes for free. If they wont do it, they let you borrow the scanner and take it out into the parking lot and do it yourself.

List of codes

However, keep in mind Autozone provides this service in a hope that you will then buy the part you need from them. So, once they scan it, they will probably try and diagnose it for you. Write down the code(s), and come back on here, and we can help. No offense to people who work at Autozone, but some think they know more than they do. And over the years, I've heard some really bad diagnosing. So just take all advice they give you with a grain of salt.

They also recomend that you get your oil changed by them even after your car is out of waranty (yeah right...). The only time I go to the dealer is when I am out of options, or feel like wasting my money.

Re: I need codes

also, since you have access to the internet, try googling, or asking jeeves about the codes. my dad did and he was able to also figure out a suggested repair to fix the code.

If I were charging $70 for popping in a plug, pushing 2 buttons, and waiting 15 seconds...I'd recommend you bring your service to me as well.

Re: I need codes

So I guess there is no way to pull the codes without a scan tool?

Re: I need codes

I don't think you can do the manual code retrieval via jumping pins and counting the light blinking, on ODBII cars, so I think a scanner is required. Plus it's alot easier anyway.

You're in Lansdale? I'm in Horsham. Autozones near you:

56 E. Main St.
Norristown, PA 19401
(610) 272-6666

520 W Street Rd
Warminster, PA 18974
(215) 442-0104

1518 West Broad St
Quakertown, PA 18951
(215) 529-4550

Not real sure which is closest to you, I use the Warminster one. I can make it from there to Lansdale in ~25 mins.
