What's the best tranny for a d-series?

Hey all.

So, pretty soon, I'll be getting my D16Y8 engine, and it's looking like I might (possibly) need to get a new transmission as well. So, I was wondering what the best one to swap in would be?

Right now, I've got an Si tranny, and I really like it, but I'm curious if there's one out there with better gearing or something, or should I just rebuild the one I've got?

Thanks.

im no d series expert...but i would think that the best trans for that motor would be the 6G 96-00 EX trans. that is the trans that that motor was originally bolted to. The d16y8 motor revs higher than the d16a6, so im assuming that the gearing in the EX trans would be better for that motor. honda must've known what they were doin when they made the trans for the EX motor. the si trans (L3 i think) has good gearing-tho (for that motor). i myself would probably just keep the si trans(assuming that there's nothing wrong with it..and because im a poor ass)....because then i'd know that my axels would for sure work with it. not sure if your si axels would work with the tranny for the Y8 (wish i knew the code) tho.

Unless you want to convert to a hydraulically actuated clutch setup, I would stay with a 4g transmission...ie 88-91 Si, Dx, Hf, STD, ZC.

oh ya.....completely forgot that your car has a cable trans....duh.... heheh maybe i should go to bed early tonight definitely forget the 6G EX trans.......you don't want to mess around with installing the the fluid reservoir and the clutch master cylinder, etc. keep your si trans...if it's bad....rebuild it...or get another one...junkyards usually have one or two decent ones (at least around here).

Cool. Thanks guys, that was the info I was looking for. Guess I'll either rebuild my tranny or find another 4G Si one.

Cool. I'll give them a call.

I'm so excited about getting my Y8 after seeing yours!!! Maybe I will be able to get it in before it gets too cold out.

The Si transmission is the best choice available. Both the Si and DX transmission bolts right up and keeps the install simple. The DX transmission will sacrifice performance for better fuel mileage and lower freeway rpms. The ZC tranmission has a close ratio 1-5th gear, but a long final drive, making the best transmission still the US Si. For the ultimate acceleration make a Si/ZC hybrid transmission, by taking the Si final drive and put it in the ZC transmission. Or you can do it the other way around, ZC 1-5 in a Si transmission case. Either way, expect 80mph to turn 4300 rpms. However, the ZC transmission requires you to use ZC or 90-91 Integra axles, and a ZC or 86-89 Integra intermediate shaft. Because these axles are equal length, many users report a reduction in torque steer.

Hey, i know this is an old post, but I just got a new tranny cause i fuked up my old one, I got a ZC tranny froma friend who just swapped out a ZC and put in a b18c1 (GSR) motor. He sold his ZC, but had the tranny, he has brand new gears in it and a Si final drive, so i got a kick ass Hybrid Tranny cause its got new gears, Si final, and i got it for 200 bucks! That and my Exedy clutch work great together! OH i love this tranny!

thats no way to put it. He is doing a swap, a SOHC Vtec swap. Not everybody wants a damn B-Series!! Just because its a D-series doesn't make it a crappy swap, so grow up.

it's all good greg. if a b series is the only way she knows how to get to 160hp, then lets all pray one day somebody takes the time to give her a clue that there are other swaps out there....
