Exclamation 1999 Chevy Venture Van, 6 Cy

My sister bought me a 1999 Chevy Venture as a gift 5 months ago. The "Low Coolant" light/sensor stays on. My sister told me that she was told that all it needed was a new sensor. Well, soon after that we started to smell a burnig smell, like burnt rubber & it started to overheat a bit. My husband took it to get it checked and was told the "back oil pan gasket" needed repalcement. Can the sensor be replaced by us or does a proffessional need to do that? Reason is because I was quoted a price of $200 just for the sensor and another $600 to have the oil pan gasket repalced. Is this an accurate price or is the mechanic trying to put one over on me? Myhusband and I see no oil leaking, when the van is parked in the evening in our garage. The mechanic told us reason is because the oil is probably only leaking when we are out driving around. Something don't sound right. Are these diffucult vehicles to repair? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. My sister got this for me as a baby shower gift.

Don't ake an offense to this because all people don't allway understand the "Car Talk".That made no sense at all.The coolant light is on because the back oil pan gasket is bad and that's why it smell but only leaks when it is running.HUH?Let's try this. The coolant level sensor is just that, a sensor in the coolant tank that tells you when the coolant is low. That's it,that's all, plain and simple. The smell is a whole other issue.I have a feeling he is trying to tell you that the rear main seal is no good. You would see evidence of this on the ground.Yes it will be more noticable when running but it will leave some on the engine/trans that will drop off.The over heating might be because you low on fluid and it is going someplace.I think you should be doing some homework on another garage.

Re: 1999 Chevy Venture Van, 6 Cy

the 99 ventures and also other years, have a problem with the intake gaskets. It may be the gasket that is giving the low coolant light, and also the smell, and the overheating.
Had mine done a couple of months ago with same symptoms, and no light since.
Mine was covered under extended warranty, so I don't know the exact cost, but I've seen on this forum anywhere ranging from 3-400 to 7-800.
