DVD player problems

The OEM DVD player in my '04 started having problems with occasionally displaying a disc format error across the screen. The movie usually still plays, but the lettering is stays on the screen. If you go back through the menus it will sometimes go away or you just have to eject and reload the DVD. Now it does it pretty much everytime we turn the player on.

Anyone seen this, know what might be causing this or what we can do to remedy the issue?

My daughter will thank you.

Here is some info from your owners manual (for some reason people get pissed when I bring this book up )
Quote:
DVD Messages
The following errors may be displayed on the video screen:

Disc Format Error: This message will be displayed if a disc is inserted upside down, if the disc is not readable, or if the format is not compatible with the DVD player.

Load/Eject Error: This message will be displayed if the disc is not properly loaded or ejected.

Disc Play Error: This message will be displayed if the DVD player cannot play the disc. Scratched or damaged discs will cause this error.

Region Code Error: This message will be displayed if the region code of the DVD is not compatible with the region code of the DVD player.

No Disc: This message will be displayed if any of the buttons on the DVD faceplate or remote control are pressed and no disc is present in the DVD player.
Typically it is the disc you are using...if changing discs doesn't resolve the concern, I would lean towards a problem with the player.

my copy and paste skills are limited as are my spelling but ill give you facts rather than Owners manual cut and paste....

this is caused by the "eye" on the laser being dirty or misaligned i would try a DVD cleaning disc that says "ok for front loading DVD players" this should fix the problem.
my OEM DVD player has done this also and i relized that the disc was scratched, the audio track still came out but the disk error would display.
This is odd since it is inconsistent with the owners manual. never seen that happen before.

Since i actually OWN an OEM DVD player i would hope that my PERSONAL experiance with this problem V.s. looking up some cryptic passage in an Owners manual would be helpful.

Game on!

Re: DVD player problems

I thought that it might be a dirty lens issue but I wanted to ask to make sure it wasn't a common problem. I checked the manual and found that but I believe I'm intelligent enough to insert a DVD right side up, so I was pretty sure that wasn't the problem.

I'll look into buying a cleaning disc for a front loading DVD player.

Thanks

Re: DVD player problems

FWIW - If the vehicle is returned to a factory trained dealership service department, the only information the technicians will have to work with is the Owner's Manual, factory service manuals, and service bulletins. That doesn't make the information in the manuals and training materials incorrect, and, oddly enough, that information may actually still apply to the problem diagnosis.

Funny how that works, huh?

You've made you point. Just let it go.

Yes, I'm afraid that, as of now, Josh will always be known as "Shiny Side Down" or "SSD", and only a few of us will ever get the reference. I think his avatar picture should be a DVD...

Re: DVD player problems

Trust me, I've used the owner's manual for a great deal of information in the past. I also believe that there are some people out there who do need to be told which way to insert a DVD into a drive. GMMerlin, had no way of knowing what my level of knowledge might be, this is the internet you know, so I appreciate the effort made for the response. I wasn't trying to be a jerk, just making light of the "information" provided in the manual about this particular issue.

I'm going to get a cleaner disc and see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks again,

Josh sorry for leaving my post half done, got called away.
If you will notice some of the reasons your DVD player could show that error would be for an unreadable or incorrectly formatted DVD...I have found these usually to be copies of original DVDs written on or by a computer.
Alot of the DVD complaints I see are because of this.
My suggestion is to check your DVDs and also attempt to clean the player..if those 2 do not work, you made need to have someone look at the player itself.
