Re: codes 98 windstar

Hi

OBDII codes 1537 & 1538 are intake manifold runner control codes. Specifically they indicate that they are stuck open. If you are not familiar, the IMRC's are 2 vacuum operated, electrically monitored actuators located on the passenger side of the engine, off of the end of the lower intake manifold. The forward actuator is just behind the alternator. Many of us have had problems with the actuators so you can search on 1537/38 or IMRC. In your case, since you have codes for both "banks", front (2) and rear (1), I would guess you have a vacuum issue.

Is your van running ok? Wondering about a vacuum leak. Many of us have found that the actuators themselves develop a leak. If one of them will no longer hold vacuum, neither will function properly as they are plumbed in parallel.

Do you have a hand vacuum pump? If so, you can test these in the van. Just pull the vacuum line off of the top and hook up your pump. Under vacuum the arm should retract. If one will not retract, you have found the problem - pretty likely that it is an actuator. If both retract under test vacuum, you probably have a vacuum line leak, or possibly the control solenoid (located on the back of the intake manifold - controls when the IMRC's open/close) has failed - been there.

Well, why don't you think it over, look it over and let us know what you find.

Good luck
