Idle engine vibrations?

99 GA v6 3.4L

Theres normal idle engine vibration... then theres what I feel...

Sorta intermittent, I notice it mainly in the morning when going to work, lately it hasnt been too cold in the morning prob 70ish

Dunno if its an engine mount or what, It feels like theres some sorta resistance like maybe in the oil causing some sorta friction and making the vibrations... clueless on this

This weekend im about to do an oil change and coolant flush... also do a pressure test on the coolant (hoping for no leaks inside the engine oil) ...

The coolant I had in there went pretty quick from last year but It doesnt surprise me if I have some sorta small leak, I run the GA pretty hard sometimes just screwin around but its always in the back of my mind that somethin could happen lol... hopefully the pressure test will be good after the flush

---
side note, I think my belt may be loose or stretched, its fairly new (1yr old) but it could also be the tensioner pully... I jiggles way more than it should.. seems like the engine will die if loose enough, it jiggles more when I have the A/C completely off...

When the A/C is on though it helps and it runs faster having tension on the line and its not really a concern... doesnt feel like its giving out or idles with a loose belt...

Think the spring might need replacing?

I've had this problem longer than the intermittant rough idle above

Re: Idle engine vibrations?

Gir

I had phone/internet troubles lastnight

So does the engine its self move or vibrate like somethings loose?

or just rough crapy idling when its cold?

Since you have the DHP it will act a little different then before.
But the motor should Not move/vibrate excessively back and forth.

The belt tensioner is supposed to move to keeep tension steady.
I know what your saying about the way it moves rapidly but sorta random shaking that make sense ?

And, the powersteering pump and the AC, if thier having troubles they can cause more drag on the belt thus pulling the pulley more or less as needed to keep the belt tight.

If its bad it'll be stiff and not move,
or will not keep the belt tight and cause the belt to slip.

DHP shouldnt affect too much...

The intermittent shake where it feels like something is holding it back... is only when im in drive.. guess ill add that and after I havent ran the GA in a good few hrs. (morning drive to work) .. way home its fine. You might be right with it being something else like a pump... my power steering I need to check on (fluid) I have a known leak somewhere or it overflows but not sure.... not serious just prob needs to be checked/refilled again...

The hard shake when the A/C is off is mysterious.. the whole engine kinda wobbles but not extreme.. its more just on the belt... not sure why its more "violent" when the A/C is switched off but who knows..

whats all on the belt line that could create resistance? water pump, power steering... ?

---
hopefully this sat. I can have the coolant flushed and pressure checked, got my fuel filter, new K&N oil filter and 180t-stat just the other day from pfyc. Should I do the coolant flush/PSI check before oil change?.. see if theres any coolant or fluid flush stuff in the oil afterwards...

Basically on the list for service on Saturday..

Coolant flush, PSI check
Oil Change, new K&N filter can
Power steering fluid check
Install new fuel filter

Re: Idle engine vibrations?

That hold back feeling could be the Traction control keeping it from spinning or something.
Could have a wheel speed sensor going bad.
Have you ever had them replaced ?

I'd do the Pressure test before the oil change.
Simply because if you change the oil,
and it leaks into it from the pressure test,
then you wasted that money on oil that will need changed again. Just my opinion .

Then if thats ok flush and change the thermostat.
Remember with the 180 stat your car wont get as hot so your heater may seem not as hot.

Enjoy the nice weather
Its like almost 60 here. T-shirt temps

let me know how it goes.

Wheel speed sensor never replaced in my book lol ... since its the trac control in that general area... couldnt I just turn off ETS?

as for the 180stat, a little bit of cold never hurt anybody...

Re: Idle engine vibrations?

Yes you can turn it off.
I've heard of people who always turn it off when they are driving. if thats really good for ALL the time.

In My GT I have to turn it off when its cold in the morning or when its wet/raining. If I dont it'll feel like its slipping the trans and the ABS Trac light will come on. Soon as I restart the car they go out tho. I know the right one is bad.

Might get it scanned some afternoon, with a ABS capable scanner, and see if thiers any trouble codes stored.

I believe thiers a few who would disagree with that statement "a little bit of cold never hurt anybody"
