225 wide tires on a 7" wide rim?

ok, i'm having a little trouble believing and understanding a buddy of mine.

i have 205/40-17 tires on 17x7 rims. now he says i can get wider tires with the same rim. 215's, 225's whatever. i don't believe this to be true. can i get an expert opinion. it just sounds like it doesn't fit.

i thought 205 = 7"
215 = 7.5

yea, all i see around here are people with 205/40/17's, i just figured they wanted thinner tires so when they slammed it, it wouldnt scrape. when i was originally buying my rims, i told the guy i wanted to get 205/40's cause i was planning on getting a civic. but that fell through, i got the accord... and the shop guy called before shipping and he asked me what car it was for, and he said because of the weight of the car i should get 215/45 to protect the rims better.

but, whatever works. as for your buddy, i think have 225's on 17x7 wouldnt work.

np.
if you were thinking about getting wider tires, measure very carefully first cause i can tell your lowered quite a bit. im assuming my car would have a wider base and wells since its a bigger car, and the 215's barely miss hitting, but i guess it all depends on your offset too.
