2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
Hello!
The fan speed control for the heat and A/C has 5 settings for the blower motor. 1-3 is not functioning. 4 and 5 are the only ones that work. What part is malfunctioning? The actual switch is fine. Is it a relay? Thanks in advance for all your help.

Replace the blower resister, located under the passenger glove box next to the blower motor. You need 7mm swivel socket to get to same.
Good Luck.

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
I just replaced mine about a month ago; very easy.... it's a bit awkward on your back though.... My back was sore for a week, lol.
The G.M. part number is 89018413. It cost me about $25.00 at a pontiac dealership. I took a photo of the box it comes in, but I'm not allowed to put a photo here. Ask the parts guy if it is G.M.'s latest version of it. The latest version was made in Japan and it's supposedly a better resistor. I guess they had a high failure rate with the older ones.. EDIT >> I forgot to mention that I have a 2000 GT1; but I would assume your resistor would be the same G.M. part number. |

Yes they are the same through 99+.
I bought mine from NAPA for $24.88. They are Made in Japan too. Resistor @ NAPA #BR82 Not responsible for stiff neck or soar backs ![]() I found it best to put the passengerside floormat over the door jamb . It makes it much easier on the back

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
I am currently having this same problem. My fan only works on speeds 3-5 so I took it out and went down to Autozone to get the repalcement. I looked at it and the resister was bigger then the original, but the plug looked the same. I went home and put it in and it was worse. It only worked on the last (5) speed!!! So I went back and returned it at Autozone and tried Advance Auto Parts and it was the same thing, just a different box. The guy at AAP told me that no matter where I go I was going to get the same part and have the same problem. Is there something I missed? Do I have to get this from a dealer and only a dealer?

Welcome To AF Andruw91.
Thiers an HVAC relay(under the hood fuse box) that could be stuck open. Also check the fuses in the dash ends. Make sure everythings pluged in all the way too. I'll look for the testing procedure on that hvac fan. I know it was discussed a while back.

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
Ok so I am still having problems with my fan. I tried 2 new resistors on my 99 Grand AM and this made it only work on the 5th setting (the old one worked on 3,4,5). So I went to a GM dealer and got the part and tried it right then and the same thing happened, only worked on the 5th setting!!!
I tried the old resistor again and it worked on 3,4,5. I talked to the guy and he said it might be the motor itself that is causing the problems. So I got a new motor and a resister and went home to give that a shot. I had to cut the power wires for the motor at the clip because the new one just has the 2 wires on it with no clip. So I did that and plugged it again and tried it. Same thing, only worked on the 5th setting!!! Does anyone have any ideas? I think the motor is fine but I have no clue as to what else to check.

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
That's a real strange one..... I've never heard of a problem like that before. Could it be possible that (if this even applies..) a previous owner could have botched up some wiring under the dash? Maybe nicked insulation off a critical wire, and something grounding out that resistor? I can't think of anything else; particularly as you tried a few different new resistors already.
Definitely not my specialty..... so watch for more help here from others..... |

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
Looking at it some more, both the motor and resister had bad connections. It looked like rust almost on both plugs so I guess something in the electrical must have be faulty. I can't imagine water getting in them so I'm not really sure. To solve it I clipped the plug of the motor and soldered it to the new one and cleaned off the plug for the resister and replaced it. Now I have all setting 1-5. Thanks for the help

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
I was going to say, if cleaning the plug on the resistor didnt work to check the voltages at that plug.
If it didnt work then it would have been your switch unit that you adjust the HVAC with. Seeing how winter is almost here, Glad you got it going. Also water gets in because you drain might be pluged up. Its located on the firewall, and elbow looking hose, points down. Try a wire or compressed air to make sure its open so water will drain out, insted of in the blower box.

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
Wow this topic got busy!
NAPA is OEM parts so if they do not have it they can order it. Usually anything for American cars. Except a Gremlin.. lol Joking.. Good tip on the back. I had a rough time when I did not use anything when I was cutting out a spot for my neon switch.

Re: 2002 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Heat and A/C Fan Control
Thanks for the assistance. I had no idea how to fix my daughter's fan on her 2001 Grand AM. Only settings 3,4,5 were working. $15 part at Autozone. Worked great!!
