P0401 and P0402 codes

2001 Windstar:

Have replaced the EGR positioner circuit for previous Engine light (Received "circut over voltage..." for this particular replacement/scan) The parts stores are confused when I say DPFE so I replaced the EGR positioner 'thing' that has two hoses and an electrical connection.

Engine light has returned, now receiving P0401 and P0402 codes. Silly codes: "recirculation flow excessive" and "recirculation flow insufficient".

Sorry for posting this BEFORE I did a search, but I'm still confused what the DPFE is supposed to look like and if I actually did replace it and it has failed again, within a month.

What the....?

Clean the IAC??

I had the same problem with my 96 whinny with a 3.0. I checked all the engine control systems to no problem found. I took a stab in the dark by replacing the tps sensor ,which solved my problem of excessive recirculation.
My low idle eratic idle dissappeared, and my high idle after warm up was gone. This might help you at a cost about $20.00 Good luck Grizz3000 if this does'nt help get an ohmeter and start reading values located in hyanes or chilton's, and do a comparison on them.

Hi
Here is a link to the leckemby site for the p174/p171 fix. DPFE is in the first picture and is boxed in green. Yours may be plastic but should be shaped similarly. If you do not see anything that looks like this, I have seen a different setup on an '01 for the DPFE - a solid state looking device that sits just below the EGR and has the same 2 hoses coming off of the EGR source line.

As to terminology for the DPFE, I know that Autozone called it an EGR position sensor which is essentially correct.

In case you are not aware, the "thing" on the back of the intake is the EGR control solenoid. It "meters" vacuum to the EGR to control when it it opens. As to what's next - since you are getting both excessive and insufficient flow detected, I would suspect the DPFE is sending bogus info.
