Head removal
If I were to remove the head to replace the head gasket, will I need to get the head cleaned up at a machine shop? What should I do?

Re: Head removal
You can just replace the gasket after removing any material from the head. Make sure you get the right gasket. You will have to replace the head bolts - they stretch during torque down. You'll spend $30 to $50 in parts at least. Having a machine shop service the head should only run $200. You'll have new valve seals and guides and be in good shape from the top of the engine. It's your money, but I'd have the head machined if I planed to keep the car for another 2 years.

Re: Head removal
Do you know what size torx bit the head bolts require?

Re: Head removal
I picked up a 4 or 5 piece 12 point (European style) torx bit set (fits 1/2 inch socket) from autozone for $9.00 a few years ago. I don't remember which socket I used though.

Re: Head removal
You should at least check the head to make sure it's flat. You need a flat edge, and I believe maximum permissible warp is .006' A macine shop could easily handle this.

Re: Head removal
The machine shope quoted me $120, and the torx bit for the head bolts is a T55 if I remember correctly.
