running warm

i have a 86 ford van 460 it runs half way on the gauge, but the fan shroud is missing would that be the problem
thank for any help

Yes, it can restrict the air flow through the radiator.

yes it is most likely why, the fan shroud directs the flow of air being drawed in by the radiator fan.
