help with a engine swap
hi, i own a 69 chevy nova, which isnt working out to well for me, i cant seem to figure out the problem. so im going to sell it.
anyways i own a 5grand raced out 351windsor still wraped up in its suranwrap. and i was thinking of buying a 65 falcon. and i want to get it with cheapy motor so i dont have to spend too much money on it. so i can put the 351w in. since its a v8, ill prob need a 260 or a 289 or somthing right? well will there be any complications, or will it fit in perfect. and will i need anything special with it, like a certian tranny or rearend. i need details kinda new at this, im only 17, and going to UTI to be one of the pros.. so im just learning |

Not sure about the falcon but with the early mustangs, from a 289 to a 351 motor mounts and everything are exactly the same, no customizing, except your suspension may not be enough to handle the added wait. Not sure about Falcons.

Re: help with a engine swap
289 and 351 w are both 90 degree small blocks the only difference is the deck hieght wich means all mountings are the same but you will need headers for the 351 due to taller deck hieght. there is one thing you do need to check early smallblocks and later small blocks have different bell housings there was a change in the mid 60's some were around 65 that would be you only real problem that I can think of and that would just mean getting a later model trans

Re: help with a engine swap
The 351 is a bolt in to an 65 Falcon
the bellhousing for the Ford sm. blocks are all the same.(289,302,351) I think he meant the motor mount pattern which went from 5" spacing to 6" spacing in 64. Headers too, will fit all sm. blocks But, the rest of your drivetrain, trans, rear end wil not take the 351;s abuse Falcon probably has a 7.5" rear end which will blow the minute you floor that 351. An 8" would work, until you really put power to it but companies like currie, moser, strange all make parts to make the 8" live to 400 hp. A better option would be to soup up your 289, you can make a 300 hp, 289 no problem & save the weight on your front end.(no power steering?) don;t even try & parallel park with that fat 351 in her. I have a friend who runs a 65 Falcon -with a stroked 289 that does 11.5 second 1/4 mile times all day Good luck |
