96 lumina throwing code 306

just bought a 96 monday, knew the check engine light was on figured i could fix it quick but i was wrong. i changed the spark plugs, wires and coil pack but neither of them cleared the code. any other ideas of what it may be??? or is there something else i should change or check???

Welcome to AF, can you feel a miss in the engine at idle or under load? When you say cleared the code, you have to clear the code unless you drive it thru several cycles and the pcm sees the problem is gone.

well i can't hear or feel it miss but it's like a vacuum line is disconnected or something would that cause it?

If it was a large enough vacuum leak to set a misfire code you would know it for sure. As I said did you clear the code and it came right back or is the lite still on after the work was done?

no i cleared the code and it came right back. the check engine light stays on while driving and then sometimes flashes and then goes back to solid

Then the problem as far as the pcm is concerned still exists, check the injector on #6 possibly bad or bad connector, not easy to access here though, additional full scans may be required to check misfire counts and do an injector balance test, this assumes all the usual tune up issues are done properly.

The 3100 has problems with fuel injectors and that is the next step.Try changing the #6 injector.

im ALWAYS going to argue this guy's! why replace plugs and wires and injectors on a vehicle with low compression in the misfiring cylinder? Man, id almost get a compression tester and check compression on ALL cylinders, and then may try a snap compression test to rule out a weak valve spring. "Lets eliminate the basics here"

Hey, sounds like my standard "basic diagnostics here" all too common statement, very true.
