'93 Cherokee Stalling...PLEASE HELP!

Hi folks,

I have a '93 Cherokee LE 4.0 with high mileage, divin for a few years without incident. Over the last few months, i've been experiencing some stalling issues. Seems to be only when I stop at a stop sign or red light. I stop, it idles fine but when I give it gas it spits and sputters and eventually stalls if I give it too much on the pedal. After it stalls, it won't turn over for 10-20 minutes. I've had it in and had the sensor replaced as well as the coil and plugs. The strangest thing is that it will happen...then no problem for a week or 2, sometimes longer, and then when I start to forget about it BAM! It's getting to where i'm affraid to stop at red lights! Any idea's as to what the problem might be?

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug - Welcome to the forum!

What sensor was replaced?

Could be TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) or maybe the CPS (Crankcase Position Sensor).

TPS is pretty easy to test, CPS is harder to test.

Let us know.

Take Care,

Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick responses. Ok, well here's the story:
I talked to my buddy yesterday (he's the one I bought the Jeep from) and he told me that neither of the sensors were replaced. I thought he had mentioned something about replacing a sensor, turns out that's not the case.

Anyway, due to my Jeep being a major pain in the ass ( ie: stalling at red lights in the middle of rush hour traffic) , I havn't been driving it for about 3 weeks. Been driving a friends truck while he is gone away. So it's been parked by the curb in front of my house. Yesterday I went to move it so I could shovel the snow that has acumulated around it but it wouldn't start up as if the battery was down. I assume the security system kicked in because the lights started flashing on and off. I had no idea how to stop it so I let it go figuring it would turn off eventually. I did stop after a while...probably after draining the battery.

Today I went out to jump it and still won't start. I've done some research on this forum about the security system and at least I now know how to stop it by "unlocking" the door. Could the security system be the reason for my Jeep not starting? I know the security can prevent start-up, but when I try starting it, I get nothing at all...like the battery is dead, even when connected with jumper cables. Sound like a security issue? Something tells me no, but i'm FAR from an expert
Any suggestions?? Much thanks,

Doug

Re: '93 Cherokee Stalling...PLEASE HELP!

Doug,

It sounds like your battery needs to be recharged or possibly replaced, since it won't crank (if I interpret what you have said right).

Once you have it cranking, if it won't start then, check for error codes using the key ON-OFF thing (ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON without cranking) and watching the Check Engine Light Flash. It should be a series of 2-digit codes. If you get any codes other than 12 & 55 (Battery Disconnected Recently & End of Codes), post them back here to get them figured out.

When the CPS when out on my Jeep, it would stall out at "random times" and then start back up most of the time. When it finally went completely out, after a few weeks of random stalls, the Jeep would not start and I got a code that said something like "No Reference Signal During Cranking" (may not be exact).

Anyway, here is another page you can look at to help in troubleshooting & testing your sensors once you have the battery working again.

Re: '93 Cherokee Stalling...PLEASE HELP!

Thanks a lot for your help Greg. The battery is fairly new, so i'll try hooking a charger up to it. The goal now is to get it to start, then i'll worry about the stall issue Anyway, thanks again.

Regards,

Doug
