dual over head on a stock z31 block...

Any one here ever try and put a set of dual over heads on a z31 block????
Same gaskets????
hmmmmmm.... Any one ever do that one???
I'm going to scower the local yards for a bit and see.....
(only saw one there but haven't been in a while)....
fingers toes and elbows all crossed.......

So anyone ever try that???

As you can tell I decided against the ka24 idea.... 4 cyl
Alot easier to drop another vg in its place...I figure a dohc would set off a nice hp gain......then I just gotta bend that cross over pipe and install A wastegate there and I should be able to have quite a spicy set up....

All that and what do I think of now dam clearance... I just remembered the whole clearence of the steering rod to turbo issue..................
damn
I was so close.............

ok back to heavily ported and polished heads copper gaskets and polished crank....... and a bigger turbo and intercooler.......nothing compared to the thought of a dohc turbo 300zx z31............................

well hmmm should I even bother or do I drop an rb into the z?/
the rb20 is quite reasonable price and they respond better to mods.......... weight the low tq numbers may be harder to bring up..........
what do I do.......... Should I weight the winter and pull out an rb26det???????? rebuild the menacingly uncooperative vg???????????
Any body ever drop a l28 into a 300???
I got a fulkly built 280zx (fully, radiator all the way to slotted rotors(complete motor turbo clutch diff you name it its built........ cammed ported polished bored turbonetics avcr boost controller act 4 puck fidanza flywheel.... 13000 in total...... 8000 in powertrain....

guess what I cant get a title.......... (sorta eliminated the emisions) (and the fuel tank is a cell nono thats bad....) and I need to send iot to a official state inspection station... not a lick em and stick em.............anybody have a rusted out 280 they have a title top and wnt to sell for dirt?

anyway enough babling

Re: dual over head on a stock z31 block...

The Head Bolts are aligned differently between the earlier block and later heads. Some of the 16 or so so bolts align pretty well. About 3 do not align. You would have to weld and re-machine the original block to torque these later heads on to the correct threads for a good alignment. There are differing gaskets as well. Timing belt would be a hybrid between the Z31 and the Z32. ECUs would have to be swapped, differing wiring harness, many differing sensors.

Re: dual over head on a stock z31 block...

i've seen an l28 in a z32 before that was built for race...

anyway, don't bother with dohc'ing the et, it's really not worth your effort...

honestly man, just throw some forged slugs in there, do some extensive head porting, go for some upgraded springs and new lifters/solid lifters with bigger cams, slap on a gt40 and some 555cc injectors, all controlled by an sds with distributorless ignition and call it a day....

an rb26dett will not fit into a left hand drive z31 without extensive exhaust modifications (new manifold with single turbo to start)

hell if you really wanted to find yourself a 3.3 block and build that up... there aren't too many things you need to swap for it to drop in, and the stuff that does need to be swapped can be upgraded in the process (knife edge and balance crank etc.

concerning the vg30de it will fit in the z31, as it came stock in the 300ZR sold in japan in the later 80's... and there are such things as the VG30DET, as sold in the nissan Cedric in the early 90's. so it does fit, it's just super tight and not really worth the money to convert when there's so many high hp vge's running around

Re: dual over head on a stock z31 block...

As for the head gaskets being different.. Oe are different from different models.. let alone different generations...As for the timing belt Id just use some gorilla glue on the 2 belt halves and call it good.... Not really z32 crank pulley...
As for the harness ecu and sensors... Thats what got me into this mess in the first place my stock harness shorted out 2 ecus... all though all my wiring sensors and info sent from ecu is correct.. it still doesn't run right... fluctuation in timing (ignition) and it runs pig rich then lean every other second (yes Ive tried a new o2 and tried it disconnected diff ecu, afm, dis, cht,o2, you name it plugs wires cap rotor..... engine timing(cam to crank) everything...

As for the rb... top mount turbo, turbonetics is the way to go, 450cc inj work for me (street) and the ecu is gonna be megasquirt...
But the other thing is I have an already built l28... like I said about 8,000 in the powertrain.... And that doesnt include the ecu or 1,000 worth of sensors and such.... sorta tempting... then I could always slap a small block in my 280 and haved legal emissions for 79 and slap a gas tank back into it and have a street legal sbc 280zx.....

As for the knife edge crank... I dont spin over 7,000 on a regular enough basis to utilize anything more than a crank scraper and a full rotating balance will do 3 times the diff.(yes thats an opinion but ) (full rotating ass. inc. harmonic, cranck+rods+pistons, flywheel and pressure plate....) But as for the 3.3 I don't think they would handle the stress of the reving boost without the forges and rods... I drive on the street and don't want to run high temp to heat the slugs up.. and they can't be tight clearanced because of the word street.. Coated stock type pistons work for me...

Any way long story short debating the internal struggle out loud do I run a stock vg and do some more mods than I had previously done, do I put my l28 into it, do I splurge and get a rb (would probably be the rb20 due to price..), or just say I doint want to turn a corner, or drift ever again and put a sbc into it.... probably a... but b is an option c would be a sweet custom... d not gonna happen.... nope nope nope... allthough all I'm lacking for a build choice d is a crank (spun a bearing and all I have left to get is the crank....) but stil no d sorry.......... I like power but I love carvin up the twistys...
