86 Monte SS LT-1 Engine swap?

I am about to purchase an '86 Monte SS with the 305 HO. Its bored .030 over and has new dual exhaust, intake and all new accessories, I.E. alternator, R-134A Air conditioner. ect..., Engine and Tranny were rebuilt 12k miles ago. I am wondering what all equipment I will need to do an LT-1 Engine Swap or if it is even necessary. My brother has a 1996 Roadmaster with the 350 in it so I would have the donor car on site. What all will I have to scavenge to make this work. I am currently in Afghanistan so I cannot feel how the car drives with the 305 but i have been lookin at the numbers on the net and it seems like the swap might be in order. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Re: 86 Monte SS LT-1 Engine swap?

Well im not sure about the Monte Carlo's transmission but if it doesnt support the LT1, you'd have to get a new transmission and then find out a way to get the tach and every other gauge in the instrument panel to work correctly.

Im sure everything else would be able to carry over since it is a V8, but i'd upgrade the springs/whole suspension set up since it probably hasnt been replaced and more than likely shot by now and also throw in a new fuel pump just incase.

Yeah i was gonna take the tranny out of the Roadmaster too,. its in good working condition. and the dude that owns the Monte now just got finished going through all the suspension and brake systems., so thats already all new, As for all the electronics associated with the 96 LT-1, what all would i need to take with it. I know the Computer and all sensors but is there anything else?

Actually, theer is no need to replace the transmission. It should bolt ot the LT1 just that same as the 305. You don't need to have anything electrical from the LT1 if you prep the intake and revert the control system to a TPI batch-fire ECM (either MAF or speed/density).

Check out the options at http://www.lt1intake.com/services.htm

Re: 86 Monte SS LT-1 Engine swap?

the only things that probably need to be carried over are the A/C module thats on the firewall if its not R-134, and i'm not sure if it will fit but if you plan on using the stock trans you might need to find an aftermarket bellhousing to adapt the trans to the LT-1, if not just switch the trans with the motor, with that though you'll most likely need a new driveshaft as the trans is probably a different length, and you can get an aftermarket ECM and wiring harness from somewhere, there are several places, Painless Performance is a really good place for engine swap harnesses.

Re: 86 Monte SS LT-1 Engine swap?

Thanks guys,, I have access to the 1996 LT-1, I am trying to take it, The 4L60E tranny, the ECM and I hear I have to take the Radiator too since for that year its a reverse-flow radiator. I also know the 96 LT-1 is different than the 94-95 for various reasons but the most notable have been the reverse-flow radiator and the OBD-II computer, I know the Transmission is all electronic so if i dont take it with the motor, I dont know how i could get a regular 700R4 to mount to it and the Computer not have any problems. I am going to contact Painless Wiring and see if they can hook up a kit to ease the electrical part. As for hardware, I hope Im not missing anything, motor, tranny, wiring harness, ECM, Radiator, possible A/C module, and exhaust sensors. Im trying to keep it Fuel Injected for drivability and fuel economy and throttle response when i need it. Im just hoping the guages will work with the 4L60E floor shifter, as the 86 Monte is Analog dash. If not ill try a 700R4 but i dont know how the ECM will react without the Impulses from the 4L60. I hope Painless can help me with all this.
