I am located in long island new york in the type of climate we have should i switch to 5-30 oil in the winter or should i stay with quaker state 10-30 all year round? Also is there any benefit or any downside to letting the vehicle warm up when it is cold or am i better off just driving off?

5w-30 is a better oil for winter starts and it is the same weight as teh 10w-30 when hot. I would switch to the lighter oil and when it warms up go back to the 10w-30. You won't hurt anything.

As for warm up you should wait at least 30 seconds in warm weather and give the engine at least 1 minute of warm up time in the cold. This allows the oil to circulate and will give you more life from your engine.
