2000 Brake discs replacement

I had my LS pass the Ontario Safety check and they told me that I had to replace the front brakes (discs & pads).

I read here that we need a special tool to remove the rear calipers/discs... do we also need a special tool for the front brakes? I want to change the brakes myself instead of paying the dealer 85$ an hour... on my cavalier it was so easy, but on the LS nothing is ever easy!

By the way, I bought all the discs/pads from Etop (found on ebay), anyone has bought these before?

Nic

Re: 2000 Brake discs replacement

You do not need any special tools to do the front brakes. The special tool is only needed for the rear brakes because you screw the caliper piston back; the front brakes you can use a c-clamp to squeeze the piston back into position. Keep the old pad on while using the c-clamp so you do not damage anything.

I have replaced my front disks, but I do not remember anything particular about them, so I think they just slide on and off.

While you have the driver's side wheel off, go ahead and change the fuel filter. It is behind the plastic wheel-well cover.

Re: 2000 Brake discs replacement

As Craigsm78 mentioned, you do not need a special tool to REMOVE the rear brakes, but you do need to use the common rear disc brake caliper kit to compress the rear caliper pistons to install new brake bads.

Many of the chain auto parts stores will let you borrow the caliper kit.
