More hard starting, but with a new pump! ?

I would just like to take a second and say thanks already for a lot of the great advice I have found in the first 15 minutes here. I already solved one problem ( Change engine oil light ) and look forward to being a part of this community. Thanks!
First off I have a 2000 Silverado Z71 5.3 and 127k miles. For a couple months now it has been hard starting if it has already been driven for the day, and unless it has sat for a couple hours it takes some cranking to start it. My first thought was plugs and wires. Next was fuel filter, as the pump was making some noise. Nothing really solved it. Well this week the pump finally went out, and I figured that this would solve it, but it has not. Everything else seems to run fine, and plus my fuel gauge works again! But as I mentioned, if it sits for more than a couple minutes, it takes some cranking to get it started again. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Re: More hard starting, but with a new pump! ?

Welcome Aboard!

A fuel pressure test will help a lot. Both running and standing fuel pressure readings would be important. You would especially want to look at the pressure AFTER engine shut-down to see how quickly it drops. Theoretically, it should maintain pressure indefinitely. If pressure drops off within a minute, the pressure regulator and/or injectors are suspect.

If the pump does not operate for the two-second prime cycle when the ignition is first turned on, the pump relay may be a problem.

If the pump runs the prime cycle and starting is made easier by opening the throttle 75% or more, the regulator or an injector may be leaking and pooling fuel in the intake.

Re: More hard starting, but with a new pump! ?

Thanks for the response. Injectors was my thought as well. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is that when it sits for those couple hours and starts right up. (I.E. overnight it starts in the first turn of the key.) But I guess a pressure test would definitely be a place to start, and help narrow it down.
Thanks again for the help!

Re: More hard starting, but with a new pump! ?

The coil packs were also something that crossed my mind, as they are about the only thing in the ignition system that I have not yet changed. I guess I would have to take them off and test them individually after it has been run. $
Thanks again.

Re:More hard starting, but with a new pump! (Fixed)

With more research into the matter, on a suggestion from Blue Bowtie,
"If pressure drops off within a minute, the pressure regulator and/or injectors are suspect."
I did more research on the Pressure Regulator and all of these symptoms fit the bill, plus it was something easy & quick to replace. A trip to my local parts store, $70, and 15 minutes I had my new pressure regulator in and it fired up immediately. So far it definitely seems to be what the problem was. Hopefully no more emberassing cranking the engine again and again! Thanks again everybody for all the suggestions.

You may want to change out the fuel filter if you have not already.. It is about that time.

Another inexpensive thing to rule out is the Fuel pressure regulator. It is easy to change right on top of the engine. I think I had this same issue on my old truck and I fixed it and then bought a new truck by impulse the same day.
