rear disc brake questions
Alright, for those of you who remember my recent troubles with my brake proportioning valve, I have exciting news.
After seeing how much trouble I was having finding a replacement prop. valve or a workaround solution, my dad decided to suprise me with an early Christmas/birthday present: a rear disc brake conversion! This is something I've always been interested in but never seriously looked into for cost reasons. So now I'm trying to get as much research done and as many questions asked as possible. With that being said, on to the questions: 1.Has anyone ever swapped a rear disc brake setup into a third gen Camaro before? Specifically, a 1983 Sport Coupe? This is kind of a stupid question since I'm sure at least a few people have done it, but any input you guys have would be great. 2.Does anyone have one specific kit or manufacturer they would recommend over another? I'm looking for something that will get the job done and last the life of the car, it doesn't need to be anything exotic. I'm trying not to bankrupt my dad on this project. Keep in mind that I'm going to be holding on to the front disc brakes. With that being said... 3.Is there anything I should do to my front brakes while I have the rears torn apart? I just got a new master cylinder a few weeks ago, but aside from that everything is pretty much stock. I don't want my new rear brakes overpowering my front ones so if there are any (reasonable) upgrades I can install in the front I'd like to know. 4.Finally, does anyone know of a reputable brake shop in the Evansville, IN area? Since the whole reason my dad agreed to pay for this was that he didn't want me working on the brakes myself I'll have to take it somewhere. I basically plan on buying all the parts that I need and then paying someone to install them. Thanks in advance for your help guys, sorry this post wound up being so long. Basically I just want to make sure I know everything I need to know before I run out and start buying stuff, so please feel free to add anything you think is important. With any luck I'll be driving around before Christmas!

Re: rear disc brake questions
How about a visit to your local GM dealership parts department? Or your local junkyard (oh! excuse me, RECYCLER).
My 92 Z28 has rear disk brakes, so finding a donor 3rd gen camaro should be no problem. |

Re: rear disc brake questions
Try looking in your yellow pages. I would ask the shops around your area if they have done the conversion and ask if they can get the parts for you car. If you buy from them they will have to warrenty the job and parts. If you buy online they should warrenty the work but if a part is bad them your stuck. Also make sure you get it all in writing so they cant screw you over.
When I had my brakes done I got power slot rotors. They are not drilled, I heard the drilled rotors have a tendency to crack between the drilled holes. I have noticed a big improvment in the stopping power of the car with the nice set of rotors. ![]() link to site click me

Re: rear disc brake questions
Maybe just get a complete rear end w/discs from an auto salvage yard?
Another thought, although it's probably more work and cost, would be to put the larger 1LE-style front brakes on your car. The fronts provide most of the stopping power anyway so the biggest gain in braking performance would come from improvments there. |
