Did I just get lucky?

On the 11th of last month, I got a speeding ticket for doing 67 in a 40. Well the next 2 Monday's after that, I called the courthouse and asked for how much the fine was. Both times they told me they didn't have the ticket in the system and that they'd get in contact with the officer wo pulled me over and ask why he hasn't turned in the ticket yet and that I should call the next week. Well eventually I just forgot about the whole thing and I just called them back today. Suprisingly, they told me the case was already closed and that someone already payed for the fine. Uh, wtf? I never payed a cent on that ticket. Well the lady puts me on hold and ofcourse never takes me off hold. Dickfaces sounded like they were almost having a party, it was all loud and I could barely here her....

Anyways, my question is, should I even say anything about this? I mean I know its wrong and everything, but shit, if someone payed for it already, then what the hell? I don't want to get wrongly accused for something, the woman I talked to said I could have a criminal charge on my driving record. Anybody had this happen to them before?

Go down and get a receipt if you can jusssssssst to be sure and cover ur ass.

When I was younger on the way home late at night by myself in a new 94 Protege a cop tailgated me down the country highway. Well, I didn't know it was a cop until I sped down the huge ass hill at 70mph (55mph zone). Needless to say he pulled me over, made me sit in the front seat of his squad car while he searched my new clean (I worked at a carwash) car with nothing in it. I asked him why he was tailgating me and he sort of avoided it. I got a ticket and I go to the courthouse to fight it on the voluntary date to show up in court and the cop never turned it in. But I still got 2 points (instead of 4) and had to pay the $50 court cost. Moral of the story is don't mention it or they'll fine you for your honesty... LOL

I just called my dad, who's like the most responsible person I've ever known, and even HE said don't say shit. The whole situation is just so weird and almost feels like I'm gettin away with murder.

it's alsmot the exact oppisite of me, i got a ticket paid it but never got anytype of confirmation they got it. it did show up on my record when i changed my insurance. but i have no idea if this means it paid or not.

Call the DMV and ask them to give you a status report of your current license (how many points are on it, etc.) It'll be interesting to see if it even reflects the ticket. Regardless, you called twice, they told you the ticket was paid for, situation resolved. As ironclad as the system can be, it still relies on human input for direction, and humans DO screw up. I'd say you got off lucky. You can call once more to verify (make sure they're not messing up when they type in your info, like spelling your name wrong or something) and when the clerk reads you back the status of the ticket, make sure you get her name, or even better a receipt (like BrodyP suggested) just act oblivious about it, like you're not actually calling to dispute the fact that your ticket was resolved

If they messed up, that's their problem. You made a reasonable effort to address the situation.

I think a lot more slips through the cracks than we believe. My cousin once landed himself a $200 fine -- he never paid it, and they never followed up on it.

Definitely get some documentation that the ticket is paid. I had court fees 'disappear' mysteriously before and thought "OH HELL YEAH"

only to have them reappear later. I asked why this was and they said it was some sort of computer mixup. I'm not sure that even if I had documentation that it was paid it would've helped me. The way they explained it was that even though it showed up as paid, it didn't matter because it didn't show that I paid it... I hate Florida

67 in a 40...way to be a thinker. you got off lucky and yeah it would be a good idea to get a receipt. maybe even see who "paid'' for it?

I don't want to rain on your parade, but:
a) 27 over, the last thing I would do is pay the fine and not argue it in court
b) the 2nd last thing I would do is think I got away with it. You don't want to find out next time you get pulled over that you have a warrant for your arrest.

What state are you in, that it doesn't have the fine written on the ticket? Every ticket in any state I've ever been in, has had hte fine on the ticket, and requires a response in 10 days or you have a warrant issued for your arrest.

thats the same here in connecticut, 10 days to plea NOT GUILTY! or pay... i got one last year at like 10 am when i was getting coffee. sent it in not guilty, and it was dropped....

I live in Texas and they require that you have to call the courthouse to find out the fine amount. So you guys think I should go up there and request a receipt?

There's 2 week period to call in and in that period I called 3 times, and each time they said they didn't have it on record.
