starter going out?

I just bought an 88 Jimmy S-15 and it was running fine. After about a month I started having trouble starting it. I turn the key and it sounds like the starter is spinning but is not engaging. At first it only did it one or two times then fired right up, but then it got to here it wouldn't engage even after 30-40 tries.. For the past 2 weeks it fired right up with no problem, but then it started again. Is my starter shot, or could it possibly be something else?

Re: starter going out?

As long as the charging system is good, battery is strong and properly charged, this sounds like a starter problem, specifically the solonoid. While these actually can be replaced by themselves, if the starter is old, just get a good starter and replace the whole unit.

Re: starter going out?

well he said the starter spins so the solenoid is good - replace the whole starter - problem solved .
