Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

I have heard many remarks and read many here about the quality of oil filters.

I buy FRAM and PENZOIL filters when they are on sale...NAPA has "No-Name" Filters.

I can't imagine that some are so terribly bad as I have heard inferred.

So, I am asking if anyone has any actual data or information concerning
Oil Filter quality?

If one changes one's oil filter at each Oil Change (as I do), who cares?

What is the filtering medium in the various manufacturer's Oil Filters? Paper?

I once saw a little two seater Nash back in the 60's that ran without any Oil
Filter!

One was not used on that engine!

It ran - and well!

The used oil came out looking like Black Paint!

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

Personally I like WIX filters or NAPA gold which is made by WIX with NAPA label.

Oil filters are not that expensive hence I go with WIX which has a good reputation,

Hasting filters also get good reviews

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

You can spend anywhere from $2 up to $20 bucks for a filter, but for the money, Wix or Napa Gold, would be your best choice. I buy them online for about $5 each.

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

Does anyone know of a web site link that shows a 'cut-away' diagram of how
Oil Filters are constructed and how the Oil flows thru them?

BlazerLT on another Thread (Flight of The Phoenix) says FRAM are
crap filters.

Again, I ask, does anyone have more than just an opinion....?!

So far, all the comments are folk's opinions.
"personally, I like...", "..your best choice.", etc. etc.

Has anything like a Consumer Reports study been done to TEST the various
Oil Filters for performance?

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

This is really good website for all oil and oil filter info.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
In the forums there's a link to filters and pretty much everybody thinks the fram filters are junk. One filter that's recommended is the Walmart brand "Supertech" which is made by Bosch and sells for less than $3.00.

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

Please! Which one of the fifteen links gives info about oil filters?

That site looks fantastic! I just don't want to wade thru all 15 links to find out
about oil filters, right now....

Wal-Mart's oil filter is good, huh? Who'd have thunk it!?

I wonder who makes them for Wal-Mart? FRAM...? In China? By convict labor?

Make that slave labor....politically incorrect thinkers (i.e. Conservatives)

Oh, that's right - you said they are made by Bosch....my new fuel pump is made
by Bosch (in china!) - Ha!

Everything nowadays is made in China ! We are so screwed!

OK - I finally saw what you meant in the Forums link in the text - under OIL FILTERS

This is the kind of educational stuff I am trying to get posted here, so we can
all learn and keep those Geo Metros running by ourselves....

Mine is so sweet now that I fixed it!

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

Yea, Fram are the WORST oil filters on the market and have almost half the filter media, a bad anti-drainback valve and cardboard end caps. All other filters have steelend caps so they dont' collapse and warp.

Fram is the only one that has the cardboard to save money, yet charge you the same price for 100% garbage.

Cost $2.99 -- Advanced Auto
ADBV material: Nitrile
Spring type: leaf
Baseplate hole area: 0.227 sq/in
Filter area: 183 sq/in; 36 pleats
Center tube hole area: 1.26 sq/in
Total Weight: 400 grams
Filter and endcaps weight: 2.5 oz
Average largest pore size: 50 µm
Smallest pore size: 17 µm
30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 4.5 oz per minute

Cost $4.99 -- Local auto parts store
ADBV material: Silicon
Spring type: coil
Baseplate hole area: 0.393 sq/in
Filter area: 305 sq/in; 60 pleats
Center tube hole area: 0.61 sq/in
Total Weight: 460 grams
Filter and endcaps weight: 5 oz
Average largest pore size: 58 µm
Smallest pore size: 19 µm
30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 9.1 oz per minute

Look at the differences in flow and filter media area.

Also check out the shitty construction you see in a Fram. This leads to failures and unfiltered oil bypassing the filter altogether. This could be why your oil was so dirty so fast.

Re: Does anyone KNOW which Oil Filter is best?

Here is one of the web links on oil analyses that I was mentioning.

Actually, it was done using synthetic oils.

I had to go back thru "Oil Level - How Important Keeping It at Top Mark?"
to find it....

It was posted by Irk back on 11-22-06 at 8:32 PM

http://oilstudy.spacebears.com/

It is the analyses with the different metals in it....

These threads are Gigantic and contain so damned much information that I get
lost and forget things that were said.....

God, we have covered a lot of stuff!

Well, it isn't one guy, it is 1000s of people that shell out most of the knowledge.

The forum is where the real info is at.
