2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

2004 Impala, 3.4 engine, automatic.
The problem I am having is with the speedometer needle will stop at about 80 mph when parked and when traveling will peg the needle. The temp gauge does the same thing. It will read hot with a cold engine and after you start the car the needle will peg 260+ but the engine temp is normal and I have good heat coming out of the heater. Could it be the instrument cluster or something else. Thanks

Sounds like the body control module (BCM) needs to be re calibrated

Re: 2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

my speedo would stop on 20kmh when I bought the car and the car would be going slower than registered by about 20kmh,so I took the glass off the cluster and pulled the needle down so that it showed 0 when idling and everything is fine now.

Re: 2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

The cluster communicated with the Powertrain control module. If the module is suspect you'll generally have other gauge or shifting problems. You need a new Instrument panel cluster. Being a 2004 it should be covered under the factory warranty.

Re: 2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

I had the same problem in my car. I found a website where I had my cluster rebuild for $140. That's a lot cheaper than the $750 that the dealer wanted to replace the speedometer.
Here is the address incase you wanna check it out:

Re: 2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

2004 SS needed the cluster replaced in 2008?? ~40k mi. The supercharger guage was offset (at about 60%) and would just bury/peak when it moved

Covered by extended warranty - $1300 at time of purchase for warranty ($0- deductible) - covered the replacement of cluster, right front hub ($850 - though I think the hub issue was from a minor fender bender but not addressed properly at the time) and replaced the sunroof. So netted a gain on this one.

Re: 2004 Impala Instrument cluster problems

Just about 90% of all gauge issues from 2001 to 2006 were the result of faulty stepper motors that drive the gauges. Initially I had a problem with my coolant guage giving a high reading and not zeroing out when I shut the key off. Then later on the speedometer would flutter when driving down the road and eventually stop in a frozen position. I bought three stepper motors (one for each gauge) on ebay and desoldered the old motors and soldered the new motors into the instrument cluster. After that the gauges were perfect.

Here is a link to replacing the stepper motors.

Although this link is for a trailblazer cluster it does give you some general steps to follow.
