replace alternator 1986 G-10 van

I'm a backyard mechanic (of sorts)...Looking for advice on wheather or not to attempt to change out the alternator on 1986 chev G-10 van...
I can't tell how they got the damned thing in there let alone out...I believe they built the van around it....Any advice would be much appreciated...
