Protege5 keyless entry

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a 2003 Protege5. It has a keyless entry system, but it didn't work when I bought it, and the dealership said it was likely that the transmitter just needed a new battery. When I opened up the transmitter, I saw that they had put the wrong battery in there, so I was pretty sure that must have been the problem, but when I actually put the right one in there, it still didn't work - as in, push any button, nothing happens.

Can anyone tell me what I need to check next? Is there a fuse somewhere that I can replace, or do I need a new transmitter? I've also browsed around the web and seen all kinds of things about re-programming your keyless entry, but wasn't sure if that applied to me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Protege5 keyless entry

My wifes remote works fine, mine doesn't work at all. The batteries are ok, so it's not the problem. It has journeyed through the laundry, which was most likely a contributing factor. You can order a replacement on line for aboutr $65 to $70.

Thanks Doug. Okay, I'll try ordering a new transmitter then.

Much appreciated!

mree, did you try to reprogram the key? Even if you get a replacement on-line, I'm sure you'll need to reprogram it. My wife has a PR-5 and my daughter has a 02 Protege ES. I programed my personal key to work on both cars.

My son has a 2000 Protege ES that the drivers side keyless door acutator broke, it would attempt to open and close the lock, meaning you could hear the little motor trying but we discovered a small nylon gear inside had broken. We fixed it and it worked for awhile but we eventually broke down and bought a new lock and actuator fom the dealer for $119.00 and installed it ourselfs.

good luck

Re: Protege5 keyless entry

If you just replaced the battery you will need to reprogram the remote. If this doesnt work, you might need to replace the remote itself:

1. Make sure there are no keys in the ignition and that all doors are closed
2. Open driver's side door
3. Insert key into ignition switch and cycle the key between the ON and LOCK positions 3 times
4. Remove key from ignition switch
5. Push the driver's side door sensor switch 3 times
6. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock.
If nothing happens, wait 40 seconds and start from step 3 again
7. Press any button on any transmitter twice
8. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
9. If you have only 1 remote, press any button on that remote twice.
If you have 2 or 3 remotes, press any button on any of the other remotes twice.
10. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
11. If you have 1 or 2 remotes, press any button on either remote twice.
If you have 3 remotes, press any button on the 3rd remote twice.
12. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
13. The codes should now be reprogrammed

Re: Protege5 keyless entry

Wow. Thanks Onblsht for the programming directions. I could've used those a month ago, but that's okay. Now others will hopefully benefit from them.

I ended up ordering a new keyless remote off the web for $40, which came with programming instructions. Just for kicks, I tried the reprogramming with my original remote, and voila! It worked just fine. So I programmed both, and now I have a back-up.

Thanks for all the help. MNwalleye, your family sure does love those Proteges! I can see why. I love mine too!
