car starts then dies

i have searched the internet forever and have not seemed to see the same exact problem.

ok my car starts fine when its cold but when im driving it studders just a little but not that bad all the time, but after driving for short distances like 10 miles and stopping the car like at the mall, when i come back out and try to start the car it will start fine, but then the rpms drop and it dies unless i hold the gas just a little to keep the rpms steady for a little bit then it runs fine untill i park it again i get the same thing. but after the car cools again it starts fine.

ive replaced the coil and igniter (is anything else in a dizzy able to go bad?) ive done a full tune up. i dunno, its kicking my ass though.

Re: car starts then dies

Had something similar with a bad headgasket... could be a lot of things though, and a compression test would be a good starting place.

Re: car starts then dies

before i did mpfi about 2 months ago the car ran fine, ive checked and rechecked my wiring, only thing i can think of is the dizzy looked a little rough that i used. is there anything in the dizzy that could go bad besides the coil or igniter? maybe my head gasket could have went. i just hope after i swap my b16 this problem isnt still there. could it be an alternator?

could be the dizzy...there are sensors in there. I would rule out the alternator. Do you have any check engine lights at all?

I would assume it's something fuel related, or a faulty distributor then...but i'm leaning towards the distributor. Find a friend's distributor and swap it to see if it affects your car for the good. Or, you could always buy a new one from autoblown and then if it doesn't fix your car, just return it.

If it's not the distributor, then try new wires and properly gapped plugs.

Re: car starts then dies

generally you should first diagonis if it's an air, fuel, or spark problem.

I don't think it's a head gasket as you said this started after MPFI swap. you can check your coolant and see if it looks cloudy like chocolate milk...that would be a bad gasket. and you would be over-heating

try another dizzy and if it doesn't get better you know it wiring. the only things to go wrong inside the dizzy (excluding coil/ignitor) are the cam sensor & crank (#1 cylinder position) sensor....we've seen the one come loose often.

silly question....but you are using a Si dizzy, right?

Re: car starts then dies

yeah its an si distributor lol thanks for stating the obvious though never know.

but yeah when i first got the dizzy from the guy, i took the cap off of it and it looked really bad on the inside, carbon shit all over it and the connectors dont fit tight, and also when i first tried to start the car after i finished the mpfi swap it didnt start untill i took the dizzy off and put it back on, so im guessing that may in fact be it, im going to buy another one as soon as i can.

p.s. also after i finished mpfi my car whistles loud as hell when i accelerate and i dont think its vaccuum the lines.

after a mpfi swap huh....................well..................my conclusion is:

1) short in the wiring (can be checked with a multimeter)

or

2) ecu

or

3) dizzy is crapping out.

keep a multimeter in the car. next time it craps on you, take the multimeter out and see if your recieving ign1 and ign2. a helms diagram would be useful for this
