1993 Dodge Spirit ES Trans Problems

ok i am having problems with my trans, first when i put it in drive it doesn't move until i give it some gas, second when i put it in reverse it doesn't got until it wants to or when i move the shifter around if im lucky. third when i drive i doesn't shift from second to third. i have no idea whats going on with the trans. if i could get any help that would be great. i really need to know what to do and also need to know what the problem is.

What you have there is a Chrysler 3-speed with lock-up. This is a much simpler transmission than the computer-controlled, Ultradrive, 4-speed automatic. These little 3-speeds are a modern, miniturized version of the old Torqueflite automatics used in RWD Mopars of the 60's and 70's.

First of all, the delayed engagement in any gear indicates either low fluid level, a clogged filter or both. Proper fluid level is a must. To check for proper fuild level, the car must be idling in Park and fully warmed up. The fluid and filter should be changed every 30,000 miles and you must use only ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluid. Now a few questions. Have you checked the fluid level? When was the last time you serviced the transmission (fluid/filter change & band adjustment)? How many miles on your car? What engine size do you have? Is it Turbo or not?

The erratic engagement of reverse and the lack of upshift into high range indicates a faulty front clutch pack. Malfunction of the front clutch can be caused by low fluid level, clogged filter or worn out clutch discs. Driving your car for a prolonged period of time with low fluid will wear your clutches out real quick.

If you haven't done so already, change the fluid and filter in the transmission. While you are there, adjust the bands, too. The low/reverse band adjuster is inside the case, so this must be done with the pan off. The kickdown band adjuster is on the outside of the case. There are only two bands. Refill with new fluid and road test. If this doesn't do the trick, you will most likely need a transmission rebuild.
