2003 silverado duramax speedometer stuck

speedometer not working correctly. truck stopped with ignition off reads 25mph, accelerate from stop sign it maxed out, will not go to zero. no cel, shifts fine, cruise still works. possible vss problem, or what else?

My friends 2003 Z71 just started doing something similar. The speedo will work correctly, then say he decelerates from 70 to 45 it'll stay at 70. Not sure what it is, may be a computer glitch, but I think the gears may be messed up on the needle.

thanks all for the fast replies, after doing more searching, i found this is a common problem. thanks again for the info and the link, that price from mrwhizard is alot better than the 450 i was hearing. thanks for the link.
