Fuel Low Chime location?

Does anyone know where the module for the fuel low chime is located (the source of the sound). There's a few of us having the "dinger from hell" syndrome. No time to change the sender unit. I'm hoping it's a module under the dash somewhere you can just pull out. Can't get it to ding in the driveway. Oh and surprise, surprise the dealer was absolutely no help. 96-99 GC, GV, T&Cs.

Re: Fuel Low Chime location?

Crap. I was afraid of that. Thought it might be a module like a relay you can just remove. Thanks for the info. I'm not going to mess with the BCM just for the chime. Do you know of a way to disable the chime? Is there a wire I could cut at the BCM or elsewhere? Or is it a case of cut the wire to the chime and you loose power to the fuel gauge?

I'm thinking the real fix is going to be the sender in the tank. With the tank 3/4 full or more, the fuel pointer will drive down and back up and thats when the chime sounds off. Will do it repeatedly 20 times a minute then stop for a few minutes then start up again until the fuel goes down to 3/4 of a tank. It might do that for a week then stop for a few months. It's got a mind of it's own. Cheers!

Install a capacitor across the wires going to the float sensor.

Re: Fuel Low Chime location?

well RIP the level unit feeds the bcm with a voltage depending on fuel level then the bcm drives the gauge through the data BUS wires torough the cluster circuit board and the bcm knows what voltage is required to sound the warning chime

Re: Fuel Low Chime location?

Once again thanks for the info. So you are saying I should not be fixated on the level unit and there are other possible causes being the BCM the cluster CB and the gauge. If I can't duplicate the problem in my driveway is there any smarter course of action than to shotgun parts? Next logical question is: in the event I can't find the "smoking gun" what is the most likely component to cause this problem based on your experience?

This is nothing I'm going to jump on tomorrow because right now it's working fine. But when the time comes it will be nice to have this thread handy. Hope you're not snowed in. This first storm of the season looks nasty. Cheers!

Re: Fuel Low Chime location?

On my 1996 with 3.3 liter engine, I had similar issues. I replaced the fuel pump as I had to remove pump and toy with the assembly to just replace the sender and at 90,000 miles iIdecided to spring for the extra $$ (Advance) and buy the assembly. That solved my problem and at 130,000 miles she is still runnng fine.

Re: Fuel Low Chime location?

I dont think I would do anything with the chime , the bcm uses that chime for a number of other things like engine warnings, headlights being left on , turn signals accidently being left on , seatbelts , MIL lamp warnings .
