Key does not turn

I have a 1999 Mazda Protege. This morning when I put the key into the key hole and tried to crank the engine, the key only turned slightly from 'off' to 'ACC', then it refused to turn further.

I've checked that the automatic transmission stick was on 'P', brake was depressed when I tried to crank. I also tried graphite lube. But none of them works. That's really weired, it worked pretty well even yesterday.

Anyone has such an experience before?

Appreciate your replies.

Re: Key does not turn

Try turning the steering wheel. Sometimes the steering wheel is turned with tension on it when the key is removed. The lock keeps the key from turning. You'll find that the wheel will not turn at all in one direction, apply some tension in the other direction.

Re: Key does not turn

Thanks for the reply. I just got it. I turned the steering wheel and shake the transmission stick while I tried to turn the key. All of a sudden, the key works like perfect again.
