2000 MC SS Surging?

Hello I posted a thread about this a few months back. I'm still having the same problem. The car chuggles/surges when I step into it lightly from a steady speed. I've noticed that it typically happens when the car is in Overdrive, and it tends to occur more frequently when I'm going up an incline. I've had a new fuel filter put on and an air induction service done, and I'm still getting the problem. I talked to one shop and they said that it sounds like a tranny problem, another said that they had several different things cause it. Such as bad wiring, and MAF problems. I'm just so frustrated with it all. I plan do get a diagnostic/pinpoint testing done by next week.

It could very well be going in and out OD. Going uphilll or passing, the transaxle should downshift and out of OD.

I've finally built up the courage to tinker with the MAF. What should I look for to see if it has gone bad?

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

I'm not sure on OBD II setups ('96 & up) but on OBD I systems, we would disconnect the MAF and try to run the car, and the ECM would work off of default values, if the problem went away than the MAF or something in the circuit is bad.

However, if you are getting MAF codes, they usually equate to a vacuum leak somewhere past it. Ever have those problematic intake manifold gaskets checked?

No, would I have to get a diagnostic and ask them to check it?

I bought some CRC QD Electronic cleaner. Is that good to clean MAFs with?

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

I had the same problem with mine--the car would not accelerate when I was trying to merge on the freeway. I had an induction service and the throttle position sensor replaced, but nothing worked. Finally I had the pressure control solenoid replaced for $840.00. The car has worked fine since. When I went in to the dealer and said that the car had a "chuggle" problem, the guy looked as if I was speaking Greek. I told him what I thought the problem was (from people at AF), sure enough, that fixed it. Good luck to you.

here's a link I found very helpful:

may not fix your specific car, but seemed to work for Highroller....

I've added the vapor canister to my list of suspects. I'm going to get some diagnostics done on my tranny Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully that reveals some clues. From there a tune up and changing the vapor canister are the next things I'ma look at. After that I guess I"m going to look at the Cat Converter.

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

The two most common causes of chuggle/fishbite are the Trans PCS solenoid and need of plugs and wires. If you haven't recently tuned it up. or used Bosch Junk plugs, do that first. While working on it, try disconnecting the battery and leaving it overnight (make sure if your radio "theftlock" is enabled that you have the 4-digit security code before disconnecting the battery). There is no technical reason as to why disconnecting the battery cures it, but it has worked for many AF members.

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

I took her into the tranny shop today and got a diagnostic/scope done. They said that it's a trans problem, and are leaning towards something with the Valve Body more so than the torque converter now. The guy was thinking like I was in that since it's drivable I should probably just deal with it for now, since rebuilds; new and or used trannys are pretty costly. He didn't charge me for the diagnostic either.

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

Would anything about a tranny flush cause problems like the surging that I'm have as well as hard engagements when I start from a stand still? I've thought about it a bit and these problems were never around prior to getting the transmission fluid flushed back in May.

Re: 2000 MC SS Surging?

I recently bought a Used 2000 Monte SS. Right off the lot (but not during the test drive or mechanical inspection) my Monte was surging badly, especially when trying to accelerate up hill. The problem, fortunately, was fixed by a full Tranny flush and hasn't given me any problems. Might not be a bat $100 to spend before you do more expensive repairs.
