Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

sounds like a fuel pump check valve problem. does it happen when it sits for awhile? the valve is part of the pump assembley, located in the gas tank you will need a fuel pressure gauge to test for pressure.it must hold at least 25 psi after you turn off the engine and hold at that or above. if it drops off to zero you will need to replace it.

Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

have you replaced the fuel pressure regulator? It is right up on top of the intake on the fuel rail. It is about a 15 minute job, and about $70 for the part. Nice and easy fix for an annoying problem. I have a 2000 Z71 with the 5.3 that would take a lot of cranking to start. After changing it out she fires up on the first try.
Good Luck!

I did the filter, now im going to do the regulator.
Is there any special way to switch it? or just rag the gas and watch the eyes?
i take it i should disconnect the battery as well .

Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

replacing the Regulator is one of the most simplist things you can do.

1) Turn engine off
2) Remove hose leading to Regulator
3) Remove clip holding Regulator in
4) Pull regulator out (making sure the seal is removed also)
5) Install new regulator (making sure seal is inplace)
6) INstall clip (This may get a little tricky, but can be done with a flot head screw driver.
7) Install hose onto regulator
8) Start engine
9) Check for leaks.

Question Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

My opinion here, you should check the fuel pressure for 60-65 psi before anything is done. How else can you diagnose this problelm?

She seems to be having common syptoms related to the fuel preasure regulator. A lot of the post on here that have these exact same issues, have been solved by replacing it. Me included. I don't think a preasure test is needed in this case.

I'm gonna have to try this out on Monday. My truck has always started really nice until the last couple weeks that it's been cold out. So I assumed that the cold was the culprit. Well it was 60 degrees yesterday and my truck still had problems starting. It's the same symptoms you described, turns over nice...just doesn't fire, and when it does fire it barely does...once running she purrs just fine and I don't notice anything wrong.

Would this problem cause the Check Engine light to turn on? Mine has been turning on and off for the last couple of months, I've always assumed it was the gas cap issue I keep hearing about. Considering that it usually turns on or off about 70 miles into a new tank of gas.

Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

Again, no matter what has been said here, random parts replacement is a crap shoot at best, check the fuel pressure, see if you have 60-65 when the starting difficulty occurs.

Normally I'd agree 100% with that. But 1.) I don't have any means to do a pressure check 2.) I'd rather replace a cheap part myself to see if it fixes the issue rather than pay a mechanic to run some tests then replace the same part and charge me labor on top of it.

If it doesn't fix the issue, which like you said there is a good chance it won't, well at least I no longer have to worry about the filter and regulator, and I'll have it looked at by someone who knows what's going on.

I don't normally take this approach, but it seems to be a fairly common problem (this regulator) so I'm going to hopefully save myself some cash and change it out myself and see if it works.

So when I get around to changing it....(hopefully monday, but I hear it's going to rain) and it doesn't work, I'm going to come back and thank you for the good advice

Re: 00 silverado trouble starting

A pressure tester cost about 50.00 comes with the adapters and is a lifetime tool purchase, I am lost with this mentality, people spend more money attempting repairs then if they paid a pro one time, in a lot of cases I see here and in my business. I wish you all the luck, don't take me wrong, if you can fix this like this great, but it is still an expensive gamble.
