air bag not deploying

Has any body heard about the air bags not deploying in these trailblazers in head-on or driver side impact accidents? I've just been starting to hear about them.

Question Re: air bag not deploying

Kinda of a broad question. There are very complex factors involved in SIRS deployment, all the facts must be made available to determine if deployment is warranted, not every side or ft collision generates this condition. What exactly and from what source are you basing this general question on.

Where or from what creditable source did you hear this information?

Re: air bag not deploying

I'm just asking cuz I am signed up on mycarstats.com and I recently got a notification from them for 2 incidents posted the same day that the airbags didn't deploy. After looking back furhter there seems to be alot of them. I was just wondering if anybody else heard anything. I have an 02 TB so thats the only year of notices I get.

Not every front end collision will activate the air bags..There are decisions made by the SDM to determine if the bags need to deploy or not.
Here is some info
Quote:
A frontal collision of sufficient force will deploy the frontal air bags. The SDM contains a sensing device (accelerometer) that converts vehicle velocity changes to an electrical signal. In the event of a frontal collision, the SDM receives a signal from the electronic frontal sensor, which assists the SDM in determining the severity of the collision. The SDM compares these signals to a value stored in memory. When the generated signals exceed the stored value, the SDM will cause current to flow through the frontal deployment loops simultaneously deploying the frontal air bags. The SDM, IP module, steering wheel module, steering wheel module coil and the connecting wires makeup the frontal deployment loops. The SDM continuously monitors the deployment loops for malfunctions and turns the AIR BAG indicator ON if a fault is detected.
My wife was involved in a collision this past week where the air bag did not deploy...Just a look at the damage, you can tell that the force was not that great......
Does mycarstats.com tell you the speed, direction and force of the collision?
If it doesn't I would not deem that information as accurate IMHO

Re: air bag not deploying

actually it does say how fast but right off hand I dont remember how fast. I THINK there was a 20mph, another at 40 mph and i believe some rollovers w/out air bag deployment. its pretty easy to sign up at mycarstats.com if you wanted to read what I read. I would post them but the way its set up i think it would be kinda difficult.

First off, the SIR system in an 02 TB will not inflate the air bags in a roll over collision.
Secondly, it depends on the force/direction and decelleration of the vehicle to determine if the bags will deploy.
Also we don't have accurate information and information from the SDM to determine if the SIR system was commanded to deploy.
Could it have been possible that the SDM found a fault with the SIR system and warned the driver days, weeks or months prior to the wreck that there was a fault with the system that the driver ignored?
Seen many customers driving around with the SIR light on.
Maybe the wreck had force enough to trigger the Inflatable Restraint Electronic Frontal Sensor, but the decelleration in the passenger compartment wasn't severe enough for the SDM to trigger a deployment.

Here are some of the examples of incorrect information
Quote:
WHILE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING 25-28 MPH VEHICLE WAS T-BONED FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE AT ESTIMATED SPEED OF 30 MPH. UPON IMPACT, FRONTAL AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY
Front bags will not deploy in a side collision

Quote:
WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A SIDE COLLISION. UPON IMPACT NEITHER THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED.
Speed and force too low

Quote:
THE AIRBAG ALSO BURNED/INJURED THE PASSENGER
Burns would be the result of friction between the skin and bag...like a rug burn

Re: air bag not deploying

Very good points, thats why I was asking. I don't recall any of the messages saying if there was a SIR light on and they are pretty broad statements. It was more to ease my mind to ask on here cuz thats what my wife drives. I've had nothing but good luck w/ my TB so I just wanna make sure its just as safe as it has been reliable. Thanks!!
