95 Bonneville won't start

I just recently have had problems with My 1995 pontiac bonneville ssei shutting off on me. While Im driving down the road It would cut off starting back up sometimes right away or sometimes it may take up to ten minutes to restart. I took it to a mechanic and he Immediatly said it was a crankshaft sensor and replaced it saying that he knew for sure that was the problem. I asked him to put it on the computer and let me know what he finds and not to guess and what ever he finds to fix it. Well he said that was the problem and said the car was repaired. The next day when I drove it to work it did the same exact thing. It would shut off and not always crank back up Immediatly but start and shut off like 2 or three times within a 10 mile distance. I didnt know The mechanic didnt do a computer check to try and pinpoint the problem but was guessing that the sensor might had been the problem because he had a vehicle I think a buick of the same year do the same thing but thats another story in itself. I found out when another Mechanic told me. Now the car wont crank at all. They then replaced the ignition module and it still didnt work, next they checked the fuses under the Dash and everything was fine. So then It seemed to me these guys were guessing and not doing the proper checks to see what exactly what the problem may be. Well, anyways to make a long story short I took it to another shop and they did put it on a computer and a code P.1629 came up. Its a Pass fault key Anti-Theft system reading. He then said I have to take it to the dealer for some reason so they can do a computer check Im guessing to possibly reset it. Is there anything I can do fix the problem or maybe look for something else that maybe wrong?

Welcome to AF, without a comprehensive diagnsotic trouble tree these anti theft issue/codes can be difficult, usually these problems prevent start or stall right after start, so there may still be another problem. This is a MFG specific code. Reset is not the issue here. The dealer scanner is designed to delve deeper into the system than a generic scanner.

Re: 95 Bonneville won't start

the most common problem on gmotors is the tumbler cylinder lock there are two wires that attach to it,every time you start your car these wires bend after awhile they start to fray and brake in half. the key that you start the car with has a black grommet with a silver resister at the top (cant miss it) this is the chip the pass code modual reads. the connection is in the cylinder that attaches to the wires that go to the modual. change the key cylinder. IMPORTANT THAT CHIP IN THE KEY MUST BE THE SAME CODE. YOU CAN CHANGE THE LOCK AND KEY BUT THE CHIP MUST MATCH GENERAL MOTORS CAN MATCH THE CODE WITH THE VIN#

Good info, but does not apply to the OP problem of stalling when driving. These wires if broken or frayed will prevent any initial start.

yes, it does not start at all now, but before the car would shut off short distances. So what kinda cost am I looking at for the dealer scan and the chip piece?

Ok no 12v to the starter, right. Is the security lite staying on during the no start event.
