14b V.S big 16g turbo

i've bought a t3t4 turbo from ebay with a huge ass exhaust housing and it seem like i'll never be able to spool that thing up. so i've recently sold it and was thinking about something smaller and something that would get me to atleast 350 whp. my goals ain't too big. lol. anywaise, my plan are to max out any of the two that i'm going to get. someone please give me some advice on how much i'm able to boost on the two turbo. and what's the difference in the two. i've already got wiseco pistons on stock rods, new steel valves, ARP head stud, metal headgasket, and all the basics bolts on. i'm just ready to get a good turbo set up.

also, i've heard that ebay big 16g are useless. they break on you after 3 months or so. is that true? i know the evo 111 are real but i need something just for temp because i'm not seattling at 350whp. that's just a goal i wanna hit for now.

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

You shouldnt trust any kind of critical part off e bay such as a turbo. Only way I would even take a 2nd glance at one is if another DSMer was selling a used turbo from his car or something along those lines. Even that, you have to be careful because then it be used. IMO, I'd buy a turbo brand new from a good source, dsmparts.com , extremepsi.com, etc, etc.

350 hp on a 14b???? You might want to make this thread into..evo b16g or 50 trim! Some say 350 hp is pretty hard on a 16g too. People on tuners always tell everyone to just goto the 50 trim. Its all how you want to try it. My one friend is putting down serious power on his 14b. Runs high 11s now but his car really isnt streetable!

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

Your never gonna hit 350hp on a 14b or 16g... The 16g's barely support up to 300hp. You will need to go bigger and upgrade your fuel components too... Also, I would never trust those knock off turbos from ebay. The only ones I would trust on there are name brand turbos that average joes are selling and not those big companies... I got my Greddy 18g off ebay and it was practically brand new for 300 bucks. So there are some deals to be had, you just have to look around and wait for them to pop up. Of course, you might almost be safer buying a brand new turbo from a reputable company... I am gonna buy something from Forced Performance once I have this turbo maxed out. (Which won't take me long at all.)

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

Actually, I think Big 16g's are rated at 350 hp and Evo III's go out to over 400 on a damn good tune and race gas, but niether of those would be close to happening on pump gas let alone without a freakin genious tuning it. I would get a 50 trim for 350 hp, that way you wont have to boost the shit out of it to make your goal. Check out PTE's on extreme psi, IIRC they are like $720 which is a pretty good price IMO.

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

Check out this turbo...http://www.hahnracecraft.com/hahn/parts/s16g.htm It maxes out at 400hp which should give you about 350whp. These turbo's are also supposed to be better than most other 16G's. Modified Mag also used on of these turbos on their project car and they couldn't say enough about it. Once my turbo die's I'm either getting one of these or a t28 but would lean toward the hahn...the price is also really good($700) it comes w/ everything you need...even a new turbo manifold and o2 housing.

I wouldn't really go for the Hahn turbo with the huge 10cm housing. A guy in my dsm club is running their super 20g with the 10cm housing, and he says it's laggy as hell. I don't know from personal experience, but do more research into it.

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

Hahn for teh ghey. Get yourself a PTE SCM50 with the smaller exhaust A/R, it'll spool quick enough and should be able to put down ~350 on a nice tune and 93 octane.

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

Just go with an Evo 3 Big 16g from FP, it's capable of 400whp.

There's so much misinformation in here it's almost unbelievable.

you're wrong

it can make 400, on a built motor, with 30 psi, high compression, and race gas

that is nowhere near normal, can't be used to judge the turbo's power

it's a 300 hp turbo with normal mods and a 350 turbo with high boost / race gas

Re: 14b V.S big 16g turbo

You're right.

The dyno must be lieing to me, there's no way I'm making 297whp @ 19psi with a ported 14b.

Of course the turbo won't last him very long then... But, he is not running some crazy ass setup so that is exactly why I say that it'll barely support 300hp in this case... Also, he is talking about wanting a turbo that will support way beyond 350hp as that is only the first goal he wants to reach. So why would he even bother wasting his time with either of those turbos if he plans on pushing it way beyond anything it will ever be able to see...

Of course, if you would like to keep going then by all means, go for it...
