2004 Grand AM will not crank

Hi Guys,

My son's 2004 Grand Am GT will not crank. Battery is very good. Dash board lights up, remote keyless works... Starter will not respond when key turned. On the dashboard.. airbag and security lights blink. Don't know if this is normal or not.

Everything was fine until a friend put front disk rotors and pads on yesterday. Suggestions??

Re: 2004 Grand AM will not crank

I got the following solution from a local Pontiac dealer.

Blinking security light indicates a problem with the security system according to Pontiac. So to reset the system...

1. Turn key to "on" position (it will not crank)... leave it in that position for 10 minutes
2. Blinking light goes away after 10 minutes.
3. Turn key to "off" position.
4. Turn key to "on"... ENGINE CRANKS!!!

THANKS PONTIAC!!!

Re: 2004 Grand AM will not crank

Hey LRG51.
This has been an on going issue with GM passlock security.

Things to keep this at a minuim,
not having several items on keychain,
keeping key clean,
and when starting give the key 1-2 sec to read the key so it doesnt trip the passlock.

These things have helped me(and others) keep my Grand Am going.
My SE started doing this , so I cleaned the ignition key hole with compressed air,
and used dry graphite lube on the key.
