Cool Fan Blows only on 5!

I have a 1999 Grand Am v6 4 door SE. Aside form the obvious problems listed in these other posts, ie. Security Light, and Check Engine Light, my problem now is the Fan! It only blows on 5, and I replaced the fuses after checking the ones needed in the fuse box, with both Mini and Maxi fuses. I dont have the money to throw away at the dealer or the mechanic so I want to fix it myself. But the Mini and Maxi fuses didnt help and I am now thinking that I need to replace all four Mini-relays in the fuse box! I wen to a local auto supply store and they cost $27.00 each. I need four and I would not know if this is the fix it all answer to my fan or not without buying them and risk losing $100.00 if they dont work. These are not returnable items! Can anyone help me?

Welcome to AF!!

Save your money and purchase a blower motor resistor. They are about $35 from a dealer. You can replace it yourself and save money. It is located under the dash next to the fan motor. You will probably want to remove the fan motor first then the resistor. It is plug and play. The hardest part of the job is getting to the fan and resistor. If I were you I would remove the front seat. If you want to take it to a dealer it will cost around $100 to have it replaced but sometimes the cost is worth the hassle factor. Good Luck!!

Re: Fan Blows only on 5!

Hi Charlotte and GTP Dad... I just replaced my blower motor resistor two weeks ago. I paid $31.00 at a Pontiac dealership for the part. In case you want that part number, here it is... 8901-8413.
The parts man told me that it is a newer enhanced version of the resistor; it is made in Japan for Pontiac. This one seemed a better quality when I compared them side-by-side.

If you do this replacement yourself, as I did, you'll need a small one-quarter-inch drive socket, with a swivel head. That damn rear screw is in a very tight area, and difficult to see. Just get a bright flashlight so you can see it better. Once that rear screw is removed, the other front screw is a piece of cake. The resistor simply pulls out, then you unplug the wire harness.... plug your new one in, and install it... Not difficult at all, but it's awkward as hell and you'll probably have a sore back the naxt day (I did..).

On my 2000 GT1, I didn't know exactly what had to be removed, so I took out my glovebox. That gave me some more light.... but the glovebox did not need to come out anyways... All that was in my way was a plastic shroud of some sort; I guess it directs the air to the vents... As long as you put it all back together, you'll be o.k. Just some plastic shroud thing, and a round tube thing that directs the airlow.

Whew... lot of typing !! And I can only type with one finger, lol... Maybe I'll make Santa's "good boy" list this year.
Yup.. I'm a dreamer too, lol....

They are all right blower motor resistor is the culprit. only high speed by-passes the resistor. lol
