88 new yorker, altenator belt

ok, yesterday i changed my mothers altenator, everything is on but the only this is i cant tighten the belt correctly, i have the belt tensioner completely loosened but it moves only about a few centimeters, is there a special way to do it???? or just how can i get it so its good to go -thanks alot!!!
