98 explorer multiple engine codes

98 explorer with engine codes 0118, 0171,0174, 0430. I know the defintion of all these codes i just need to know how to fix them. The truck will start fine when it is cold but if i make a trip to a store and only have the truck off for a short time 8 out of 10 times it wont start. Starts great cold and revs perfectly only has trouble when warm. any help would be appreciated...

I'd start by checking the coolant temperature sensor circuit. If the coolant temperature sensor is not responding the way it should, your air/fuel ratio could be way off, leading to the codes P0171, P0174, and ultimately the P0430. And since code P0118 is "Engine coolant temperature circuit high input" that certainly seems to make sense.

I have already bought the ECT sensor its just a matter of being able to install it. I would like a to avoid having to take as many parts off to get to the sensor an suggestions or tips on this let me know thanks..

You did make sure to get the sensor rather than sender, right? I'm not possitive on the '98, but many Fords use a sensor for the PCM and a nearly identical sender for the guage in the instrument cluster.

Yes i got the sensor, its just so hard actually getting to it to put a wrench on it to remove and replace.....

I'm guessing from your username that you have a Sport, and therefore the 4.0L V6 rather than the V8. I don't have the service manual for the 98 model year, but according to the 2000 service manual:

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor — 4.0L SOHC, 4.0L (Push Rod)


Removal and Installation

4.0L SOHC
1. Remove the thermostat and housing. For additional information, refer to «Section 303-03».

For All
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «Section 414-01».

3. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

1 Disconnect the connector.
2 Remove the sensor.

4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

And to remove the thermostat and housing on the SOHC:

1. Partially drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding» in this section.

2. Remove the bolts and the accelerator control splash shield.

3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «Section 303-12».

4. Remove the upper radiator hose.

5. Remove the bolts, water outlet adapter and thermostat.

Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary.

6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Hopefully my last question for you is... I know i bought the ECT sensor and i know that the sensor and sender are located under the throttle body, one confusing diagram showed me that the sensor was the one on the left and the send was on the right if you are facing the engine. The one that is believed to be the sensor has an orange connector plug on it. Does this sound correct. Thank you for all your help it is greatly appreciated...- kyle

According to the wiring diagram for the 2000 model year, the coolant temperature sensor should have two wires, one that is Light Green/Red and one that is Gray/Red.

The wires for the sender are Red/White and Black/White.
