S10 problems?

My name is jeremy and I have a manual transmission 1998 s10. When backing up in my truck, it will stop and either come out of gear or not completely go into gear. Sometimes when coasting down hills, without giving gas, it will pop out of 5th gear and I have to push clutch in and apply gas to get it to stay back in 5th gear. any help?

Re: S10 problems?

My limited knowledge of manual transmissions would lead me to believe it could either be a linkage (shifter) issue or a synchro issue. Someone else can give you more info I am sure.

Where the shifting stick goes into the transmission thee usually is a plastic cap on the end of it.
Pull it out and see if it is still there.
Also with shifting stick out reach in there with a big screwdriver and push the shift rail in gear and see if if snaps in gear good.
If it snaps in gear good there the problem is internal.
Might be time to have a good repair shop check it out.

Re: S10 problems?

Is this behind a four-cylinder (NV1500 transmission)?
