Question Speedometer/odometer Not working

The speedometer/odometer stopped working on my son's '99 ZX2 with manual transmission. The Check Engine light is on also. While troubleshooting in this forum, I noticed references to a faulty speed sensor as possibly causing the problem. Can anyone confirm this? Where is the speed sensor located on a car with manual transmission? My Haynes manual provides no info.

Re: Speedometer/odometer Not working

It's on the lower rear of the trans. Unless there's a faulty wire, it's most likely the VSS. The odometer and speedomer are 2 different mechanisms and most likely won't go at the same time.

Re: Speedometer/odometer Not working

i have the same problem on my '98 zx2 after replacing my alternator, both speedometer and odometer do not work with my check engine light on. Does the speed sensor have inputs to both items? If not, what else could cause both to go out at the same time?

Re: Speedometer/odometer Not working

Since they went with the alternator, I would assume that the wiring is okay and something is blown. Check that the fuse isn't blown, because of a voltage spike when the alternator went. (It's a 10Amp fuse that says OBDII on Ford's wiring diagram) If the fuse is fine then I would suspect the VSS. Because both failed at the same time i doubt the problem is in the instrument cluster.
