Scan tool

I need an advise.
The car is 1995 SSEi and I'm looking for a scanning tool.
Possibly PC based or something else.
I know there was that mixup with OBD 1 and II on 1995.
I went to mech a month or so ago and he said my CEL is on because of EGR.
Changed it and the light still on. I just want to own my own scan tool and need an opinion.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Scan tool

Actron 9145 with all the cables, but it doesn't go deep into the system it is not bi-directional and cannot command the egr. Blocked passages can cause codes( don't know here which one).

Re: Scan tool

THis interfaces with a laptop...but you have to build it. The author had done it for a Transport..but the system is in most respects similar.

About EGR: I had changed mine --overdue for years -- last spring and still had the CEL back ON for the EGR....checked the EGR connector: I had pulled too hard on the wires when I removed the plug and one of them --in fact the 12V supply - had partly slipped out of the plug and would not make contact. Put in back in place --was kind of difficult to push it back into the connector - and CEL disappeared..

Thank you.
I will check it tomorrow. It's seems to start pyling up.
Now it shutter when RPM is under 2000 on higest gear.
I changed plugs and wires and it seems like no improvement, even a little worst then it was before. I put Autolite pro wires and plugs.
If it something with transmission(beginning of the end ) that will be the very bad news. Supercharger has rattling sound. It may be a coupler and coolant
disappears, but not too fast.Like 3 inches in reservior after 2500 miles.
Are the other models hve so many problems after 115000 miles.
I owned Hyunday Elantra 2000,made 150,000 miles and the only thing I've changed besides brakes, battery etc. was front bearing and termostat.I didn't even change timing belt which broked at 150,001 and I dumped car on junk yard.
I like Bonneville ,but it starts to bother me with all that stuff one after another.

Thanks for reply anyway.

Re: Scan tool

I just bought Actron 9145 on E Bay for $125. There was one 9110 for $50 ,but I decided to get 9145 in case I will own 1996 or after vehicle later on.

Thank you all for your advice.

Re: Scan tool

I just want to post a update on my "fight" with "Check engine" light.
After the scan I've got all bunch of codes including EGR fault,QDM1 and QDM 4 fault, evapor fault etc.
Today I fixed everything in 5 min.All it takes to put somer pieces of puzzle together.
I bought the car 2 months ago.Cruise control didn't work,Check engine light was on,strong smell of fuel around evap canister. After I scanned the car I was browsing this forum and bonnevilleclub.com and I saw somebody posted a page from service manual. It shows an EGR solenoid, evapor, boost solenoid all get 12v from one fuse #5 CRUISE CONTROL FUSE on passenger side panel.
Fuse WAS BURNED and after I changed it the light is gone, all codes are gone.
The only one left is QDM 1,which I think I will pinpoint later.
I just think this info will be usefull for somebody to fix a car with similar symptoms.

Regards
