painting over clear coat

i am painting hi end speakers . i have laid down formica over wood and using it as my substrait. the primer went on good , but the paint look textured and i have already cleared it. i am using a metalic paint can i scuff up the clear and reshoot with paint and then reclear. i need help asap

What you are suggesting might work, but I've got a sneakin' hunch it won't solve your problem!
Is it safe to assume you are going for a smooth, glossy finish?
Surfaces such a formica, wood, etc. have a very porus texture, and paint alone most likely won't fill the holes, grooves, and pores and won't produce a smooth finish.
Go ahead and sand it as you suggested, but first apply a good grade high-build catylized primer-surfacer. After it dries, apply a "guide coat" and block sand it to a smooth finish. (depending on the texture of the formica, a second coat of primer might be needed) Then paint to your heart's content!
