Question external electric fuel pump for TBI?

I am original owner of a 1990 Suburban 1500 2WD with a 383 small-block and 700R4 trans.

The original fuel pump died at 150,000 miles. I replaced it with a Carquest model with lifetime guarantee.

Used the guarantee a couple of months ago when the second pump died at 400,000 miles.

Has anyone installed an external pump with enough pressure to feed the TBI system? They always seem to break hundreds or thousands of miles from home and I'd like to eliminate 90% of the hassle next time.

Please specify manufacturer, model number, installation location and any fittings or adapters used. Thanks!

Re: external electric fuel pump for TBI?

Most speed shops can provide you with a pump that will range from 9-13 psi for your tbi, some are adjustable at the pump, some need external regulators. Cutting into the existing fuel line with double flare fittings is the usual procedure for a stock chassis /engine set up. You would have to remove/bypass the tank pump and still have a return line set up from the regulator in the TBI. These pumps are not designed to pull fuel from the tank in most cases and should be mounted as low as safety permits. 250k on a pump, I don't think any pump would last that long!

You can go back to Carquest, have the parts person pull the book get in the back and look at the pressures of the universal pumps, find one the does 9-13.

Re: external electric fuel pump for TBI?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not sure the original pump needs to be removed. When they stop working, they are invariably stuck in the open position. Seems like all you'd have to do is disconnect the power to the in-tank pump.

But would the original return still work?

SOMEBODY out there must have done this modification.

You cannot pull thru the stock tank pump.
